Sri Saluri Vasu Rao, born on 25 January 1953 in Madras, belongs to one of the most illustrious musical families in South Indian cinema—the Saluri lineage, which has shaped the soundscape of Telugu film music for decades. As the third son of the legendary composer Dr. Saluri Rajeswara Rao, often hailed as the “Pitamah” of Telugu film music, and Smt. Rajeswari Devi, Vasu Rao grew up in an environment where melody was not just an art form but a way of life. Early Musical Journey

Vasu Rao began formal training in violin under Sri Samudrala Sathagopalachari. At age 17 (around 1970), he ventured into the film industry as a guitarist, first under Pithapuram Nageswara Rao and later with Madhavapeddi Satyam. He collaborated with acclaimed Telugu and other Indian music directors, performing in approximately 500 musical productions, notably alongside the iconic S.P. Balasubrahmanyam.

Transition to Music Direction

In 1986, Vasu Rao debuted as a music director for Vijaya Bapineedu’s Police Officer, marking the beginning of a prolific career. Over the years, he composed for 54 Telugu films, including hits like Dabbevariki Chedu, Bhama Kalapam, Surigadu, Naakoo Pellam Kaavaali, Big Boss, Rowdy Alludu, Gang Leader, and Majnu.

Transition to Music Direction

In 1989, his college friend Jandhyala gave him the break as a music director for Hai Hai Nayaka, marking a pivotal shift. He went on to compose music for over 60 Telugu films, including celebrated works such as Brundavanam (1992), Bhairava Dweepam (1994), Madam (1994), Maatho Pettukoku (1995), and Ramayanam (1997)

Collaborations & Musical Prowess

Vasu Rao’s versatility is reflected in his work with 39 music directors—from his father and Telugu masters like Ilayaraja, Ghantasala, Satyam, Chakravarthi, Raj-Koti to Bollywood legends such as R.D. Burman, Bappi Lahiri, Laxmikant–Pyarelal, and O.P. Nayyar.
A testament to his mastery, acclaimed director Bapu once postponed recording Kanda Gelichindi from Bhakta Kannappa for seven days to feature Vasu Rao’s bass guitar track.

Annamayya Keerthana Project

Since 2014, Vasu Rao has served on the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam’s Annamacharya music initiative, composing 1600 keerthanas and continuing to add the next 100 songs. This immense devotional contribution merges his classical roots with spiritual heritage.
